"Zaddock was married twice. His first wife was also from East Townsend, Ohio. They had several more children. They had twin children who died at birth of typhoid fever. (Source: "Uncle Bert"). He then married Orpha Knapp. They went by covered wagon to Iowa. When the Civil War broke out, he came to Townsend and left his six children, swam the Huron River and enlisted in the Ohio Volunteer Engineers Company K. Record is on the monument issued by US Government War Department. 'One of the first regiments to answer Lincoln's call for men.' " Note: while the regiment was one of the first, Zadock's enlistment records indicate that he did not enlist until 1864.

Text written by Adam Fornof on blue stationery from The World Fire and Marine Insurance Company:

"Zedock Martin - Husband of Orpah Martin was in Iowa when Civil War broke out. Tried to enlist in Iowa regiment, but after hiking for 24 hours the river was too high and they could not cross into the town to enlist. They then hiked to Townsend Ohio, and enlisted in 1st Ohio Veteran Volunteer Engineers. Their operations were in Tennessee, then transferred to Decatur, Alabama, to build pontoon bridges for Sherman's march to the sea. Was stationed on Mission Ridge in a blockhouse. He was assigned to the top bunk and when he went to get in discovered a dead (Johnny) (or Rebel) in the bunk. The block house had not been occupied for 2 months, he took out the dead soldier and buried him, and then used the bunk."

Oral History:

His son Ed Martin was John Bartlett's commanding officer in Company G in Norwalk.
Zadock's brother had a son, Ed, who became an attorney. He owned the house at 64 E. League Street, where John Bartlett moved after his wife died.

Zadock Martin owned a dairy. He also was a cabinet maker. Inez Bartlett remembers seeing the buttery, which had to be kept very clean, with the big bowls of butter in it. Zaddock lived in Townsend, Ohio (source: notes by Inez Bartlett held by Ruby Fornof).

Zadock had poor vision. Inez remembers Orpha reading to him, and that he could not see the color of a new dress that Inez had. She thinks his eyesight was injured during the Civil War.

A Martin home on Main Street in Norwalk is a public landmark.
